The Root of It All

Muladhara is your first chakra. It is known as the “Root Chakra” and is located at the base of the spine. Muladhara is associated with security, safety, survival, basic needs (food, sleep, shelter, self-preservation, etc.), physicality, physical identity (or other aspects of self), grounding, support and foundation for life. Rosewood, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Black Pepper, Cedar, Cloves, and Ginger are the oils that can heighten your Muladhara. It is associated with the element Earth: imagine being rooted with the earth from the bottoms of your feet.

Being grounded in the earth luckily doesn’t mean you’re getting your privileges taken away! In fact, it means the opposite. Being grounded is when you become one with the Earth and gain power. When you are grounded, you are feeling your sense of belonging and being in the here and now. Go outside, barefoot, stand in the grass and imagine your feet are the tree’s trunk. Picture roots from the soles of your feed connecting to the soil. There is nature all around us giving us so much to absorb and become deeply rooted.

When your root is blocked you may experience physical as well as emotional pain. Thinking back to the position of your Muladhara, you may experience pain in your lower back, knees, feet, or legs. If your Muladhara is blocked you might also feel fearful, insecure, or unable to focus.

The following crystals can be used to charge, illuminate and align your Muladhara. Remember to get the most out of your crystals you should cleanse them (smudging them with sage or sitting them out in the moonlight are my personal favorite methods). You can also hold your crystal(s) and set your intention.

Red Jasper, Tiger’s Eye, Ruby, Black Agate, Black Tourmaline, Garnet, Hematite, Jet, Obsidian, Petrified Wood, Smokey Quartz

Practice letting go! Let go of things that no longer serve your higher purpose. Letting go includes letting go of self-doubt, fake/toxic people, anger, and comparing yourself. When you let go of these things you’ll see that you have so much to be grateful for! These things we let go could be dulling the shine of our bright red grounding chakra.

Here are a few affirmations that can be said out loud (or in your head) daily to bring peace to your root chakra. These affirmations connect you to the universe by sending the positive energy with faith that these are already true.

“I am always safe.”

“I am grounded.”

“The universe will always provide for me.”

“Life loves me, and I love belonging here.”

“My needs are always met.”

“I claim a healthy body.”

“I am a divine being of light, and I am safe, protected and secure.”

“I claim abundance.”

“I am always supported and shown the next step to take.”

“I love my body.”
